General Information

Those interested in joining one of Coppe’s postgraduate degrees (master’s and doctorate) should apply directly via one of its thirteen programs. Each program has its own registration schedule and specific requirements for admission. Click on your program of choice to access the call for admissions. If you are an international applicant, a visa is required to reside and study in Brazil.

International applicants: Obtaining a Visa

International students or researchers are required to obtain a visa at a Brazilian representation in their country of origin. The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues different categories of temporary visas, such as VITEM I (educational and cultural exchange travel); VITEM II (business); VITEM IV (students and interns with unpaid activities).

For more information on Brazilian visas, visit http://www.portalconsular.itamaraty.gov.br/vistos-para-viajar-ao-brasil.

It is important that those interested in travelling to Brazil contact the competent Brazilian consulate to ask about the requirements for entering Brazilian territory well in advance of the travel. Each consulate requires a specific set of documents depending on the nationality and the country of origin of the traveler.

For a list of Brazil’s consular network, visit http://www.portalconsular.itamaraty.gov.br/representacoes-do-brasil-no-mundo

Mercosur citizens

Nationals of countries which joined the Agreement on Residence for Nationals of Mercosur (namely, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru) may apply, in a Consular Office, for a temporary residence visa. Those who already live in Brazil can go directly to the Ministry of Justice. After two years in Brazil, holders of a temporary residence visa can request a permanent resident status to the Federal Police.

Every international student should register at the Department of Federal Police within 30 days since entering Brazilian territory. To that end, it is necessary to schedule an appointment at the Federal Police.

If you are still in your home country, you may request a CPF in a Brazilian consulate.
You should contact the consulate to ask about this procedure. You will need to bring this form filled: http://www.receita.fazenda.gov.br/Aplicacoes/Atcta/cpfEstrangeiro/Fcpf.asp

If you are already in Brazil, you can request a CPF in the Correios (post office), with the cost of R$ 7,00 (seven reais). There is a post office in the UFRJ’s Center of Technology, in bloco C. You will need to take your passport and the document you used to register at the Federal Police.
